This is the first site in Uruguay to be declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1995. Founded in 1680 by the Portuguese Manuel Lobo, the city went from Portuguese to Spanish domain several times, until the Declaration of Independence in 1825. These events turned the capital of Colonia into a melting pot of architectural styles in which colonial-style buildings coexist, typically Portuguese and Spanish-style housing. Walking through its cobbled and irregular streets will take you back in history, and will allow you to enjoy a unique landscape with privileged views to the Río de la Plata. The houses, cobbled streets, typical street lights, and magical sunsets have always attracted visitors. The Portón de Campo, the Street of Sighs, the Lighthouse, the Art Galleries and the history that its Museums treasure are only some of the attractions to discover.
